Fivetran Activations — Product Documentation
Fivetran Activations is the reverse ETL product that Fivetran acquired from Census in May 2025 and integrated into its unified data movement platform.
What it is. A cloud-based, no-code platform for managed, automated reverse ETL (rETL) pipelines. An "activation" in Fivetran's model is a reverse ETL data pipeline that moves datasets from a source (a data warehouse or data lake) to a destination (CRM, marketing platform, support tool, or other SaaS application).
Connector scale. Fivetran's combined connector library across ingestion (ELT) and activation (reverse ETL) exceeds 700 connectors. This makes it one of the largest combined data movement libraries available.
Live Syncs. Census/Fivetran Activations introduced Live Syncs, enabling real-time (sub-second) reverse ETL from supported CDWs including BigQuery — substantially reducing activation latency for composable CDP use cases compared to traditional scheduled-batch rETL.
Billing model. Activations use their own MAR (Monthly Active Records) consumption curve per activation destination. Fivetran now offers three billing meters: connection MAR (ingestion), activation MAR (reverse ETL), and transformation MMR (dbt Core). Each meter is charged independently.
Context. Fivetran's acquisition of Census made it the first major ELT vendor to own both sides of data movement. The structural activation role — warehouse-native sync to CRM and marketing channels — is unchanged from the Census era, but the vendor is now Fivetran (larger entity, broader go-to-market, 900+ combined connectors noted in acquisition coverage).
Alternative-to. vendor.hightouch; composable activation layers on top of Snowflake, Databricks, or BigQuery.
