Salesforce Ecosystem CDP Evaluator — Deepen into Data 360 or Augment with Composable Activation

For an enterprise with Salesforce CRM and Salesforce Data 360 (incumbent or planned) as the CDP layer, the evaluation is not "Salesforce vs. composable" but "where does the canonical customer profile live and which activation paths need to be served?" Path 1 (Deepen) commits to Data 360 + Marketing Cloud Next + Agentforce as the unified stack. Path 2 (Augment) keeps Data 360 as the Salesforce-ecosystem profile layer while adding a CDW-native composable activation layer (Hightouch or Fivetran Activations) for CDW-held ML models and non-Marketing-Cloud channels. The choice is driven by CDW data access requirements, ML model location, and channel breadth — not by cost alone.

Salesforce Ecosystem CDP Evaluator — Deepen into Data 360 or Augment with Composable Activation

When an organization matches archetype.salesforce-ecosystem-enterprise-evaluating-cdp — Salesforce CRM incumbent, Data 360 as the CDP layer, evaluating whether the Salesforce-native stack is sufficient — the evaluation question is not "Salesforce vs. composable" but "where should the canonical customer profile live, and which activation paths do we need to serve?"

Why the question isn't "Salesforce vs. composable." The Marketing Cloud Next consolidation (June 2025) unified nine previous Salesforce marketing acquisitions onto Data 360, making the Salesforce-native stack architecturally coherent for the first time. Agentforce Campaign Creation and Personalization Decisioning are now first-class capabilities within this stack. For organizations where activation is exclusively Marketing Cloud-native, Path 1 (deepen) is architecturally clean and operationally simpler. Path 2 (augment) adds value only when the CDW holds data or models that Data 360 cannot consume — or when required channels extend beyond Marketing Cloud Next.

Path 1 — Deepen into Salesforce native stack. The integrated Salesforce CRM → Data 360 → Marketing Cloud Next stack eliminates data movement outside Salesforce's platform boundary and puts Agentforce orchestration at the campaign layer. The correct diagnostic question before committing to Path 1: "Does Data 360 have access to all the data marketing needs, and do all required activation channels exist natively in Marketing Cloud Next?" Organizations that answer yes to both can commit to Path 1 without architectural regret.

Path 2 — Augment with composable activation. vendor.hightouch (Gartner CDP MQ 2026 Leader; native connectors for Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery) and Fivetran Activations are the primary reverse-ETL tools that enable CDW-to-channel activation without displacing Data 360 as the Salesforce-ecosystem profile store. Path 2 is appropriate when the data science team's ML models must remain in the CDW but marketing needs them for activation; or when destinations outside Marketing Cloud Next (The Trade Desk, Criteo, niche email providers) are required. Data 360 can coexist as the Salesforce-native profile layer while the CDW serves as the canonical profile store for ML-driven activation — but this dual-layer governance requires explicit ownership alignment before implementation.

The governance question is the hardest part. Both paths are technically feasible. The harder question is organizational: if the CDW becomes the canonical profile store, Data 360 becomes a downstream consumer of CDW-assembled audiences — inverting the intended relationship. This inversion requires IT, Marketing, and Analytics to agree on data ownership before the architecture is built. Organizations that skip this alignment step often end up with both layers in production, each serving a subset of use cases, with no clear source of truth.

What this recommendation does NOT do. It does not address sub-10-second personalization (edge decisioning via capability.edge-decisioning) or intra-session activation without a stream-processing team (see recommendation.platform-bundled-ai-decisioning-for-stream-processing-gap). Salesforce Data 360 operates at batch and micro-batch latency tiers; real-time sub-second decisioning is outside this recommendation's scope.
