Census is a reverse ETL platform that syncs modeled data from cloud data warehouses to operational business tools. Peer to vendor.hightouch in the composable CDP activation layer; both tools occupy the same structural role (reads from CDW, pushes to destinations), with Census historically emphasizing CRM and sales-tool sync (Salesforce, HubSpot) alongside marketing activation.
Role in composable CDP architecture. Same structural position as Hightouch: replaces a packaged CDP's built-in destination connectors. The data engineering or analytics team defines the audience or attribute set via SQL or dbt models; Census handles sync, identity mapping per destination, and diff computation to avoid full-refresh API calls.
Operational analytics positioning. Census coined the term "operational analytics" for the practice of moving analytics-grade, CDW-computed data into operational systems where it drives business processes (e.g., syncing customer lifetime value scores into CRM to drive sales call prioritization). This positions Census at the intersection of marketing activation and RevOps/sales-ops, which Hightouch has historically targeted less explicitly.
Census and the Gartner MQ. Census was not evaluated in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for CDPs (category: packaged CDP platform). This reflects a category distinction — Census targets the composable CDP activation layer and operational analytics use case, not the packaged-CDP enterprise platform market. The absence is not a market-signal negative; it reflects a deliberate positioning distinction from peers like Hightouch (which appeared in the 2026 MQ as a Leader).
Where it fits. Organizations that are CDW-centric and need to activate segments across both marketing channels (ESPs, ad networks) and sales/service tools (CRM, support platforms) from a single activation layer.
Where it is less suited. Organizations whose data backbone is Databricks-native may find Lakebase eliminates the need for Census entirely. Organizations with thin DE staffing that cannot write SQL/dbt models face the same barrier as any warehouse-native activation tool. Organizations wanting a fully packaged, vendor-curated journey experience are better served by a packaged CDP.
Acquisition by Fivetran (May 2025). Census was acquired by Fivetran on May 1, 2025 and integrated into the Fivetran platform as Fivetran Activations. The Census product team, including co-founder Boris Jabes (now leading data activation strategy at Fivetran), joined Fivetran. Census's existing customers migrate to Fivetran Activations.
Post-acquisition, Fivetran's total connector count exceeds 900 (ingestion + activation combined). Fivetran Activations added Live Syncs (GA), enabling sub-second real-time reverse ETL from BigQuery and other CDWs — reducing activation latency from the prior 15-minute scheduled-sync floor into the latency-tier.intra-session range for supported CDW+destination pairs.
Implication for recommendations. Organizations evaluating "Census" for composable CDP activation should evaluate Fivetran Activations as the successor product. The structural role (warehouse-native activation, CRM and marketing channel sync) is unchanged, but the vendor is now Fivetran — a larger, better-funded entity with broader go-to-market and an ingestion product that provides end-to-end data movement (ingest + activate) from a single vendor. The alternative-to relationship with vendor.hightouch remains accurate.
