Tealium

Enterprise CDP offering AudienceStream (server-side identity resolution, real-time segmentation, 1,400+ integrations), iQ Tag Management, and — as of May 2026 — a native AI capability suite: AI at the Edge (on-device edge inference via mobile SDK), AI Decisioning with IYOM (Invoke Your Own Model), MCP-powered Configuration Agent, and AI Partner Ecosystem (Amazon Bedrock, Pinecone, LangChain). 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant Challenger.

Tealium is an enterprise CDP with origins in tag management (iQ) and real-time data collection (EventStream, AudienceStream). Gartner Magic Quadrant Challenger for CDPs in 2026 — moved from Leader in the prior cycle; this repositioning reflects competitive pressure from AI-native and warehouse-native CDP entrants. Key capabilities (from product documentation).

Consent integration. Tealium's data layer natively tracks consent signals from CMP platforms (OneTrust, Cookiebot, etc.), making it a natural fit for GDPR/CCPA-compliance-first organizations. Consent state can propagate to suppression logic at the AudienceStream action level — architecturally cleaner than post-hoc batch suppression in some composable stacks.

Where it fits. Organizations prioritizing real-time server-side data collection and consent management as first-class platform features, particularly those moving away from client-side tag proliferation. Organizations operating CDW-centric data strategies can use IYOM to invoke CDW-trained models from within Tealium's activation layer, retaining CDW ownership of model training while Tealium owns real-time activation and consent-gated delivery. Tealium still maintains a proprietary profile store — it is not a warehouse-native CDP in the Hightouch/Fivetran-Activations sense — but the prior constraint on CDW-centric architectures is substantially reduced.

Where it is less suited. Organizations committed to a fully warehouse-native architecture — no proprietary profile store anywhere in the stack — should note that Tealium still maintains its own proprietary profile store; IYOM narrows but does not eliminate this, since Tealium (not the CDW) remains the activation-layer system of record. Organizations weighing vendor trajectory should also note Tealium moved from Leader to Challenger in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for CDPs, a repositioning the node's own body attributes to "competitive pressure from AI-native and warehouse-native CDP entrants." A better starting evaluation for a pure warehouse-native/no-proprietary-store requirement is vendor.hightouch or vendor.census.

AI capability suite (May 2026).

AI at the Edge. High-performance native mobile SDK enables on-device data transformations and edge AI inference without requiring app store releases. Consent-aware processing happens at the edge before data reaches Tealium or third-party destinations.

AI Decisioning + IYOM. Tealium runs decisioning on live event streams — generating instant churn scores, product affinities — and feeds outputs directly into customer profiles and activation flows. IYOM (Invoke Your Own Model) allows organizations to trigger their own models in their own data cloud or AI environment (e.g., BigQuery ML, Databricks MLflow) and activate results in real time across Tealium's 1,400+ connector actions. IYOM materially changes Tealium's position in CDW-centric stacks: the CDW can own AI model training and scoring; Tealium owns real-time activation. This is architecturally different from warehouse-native CDPs — Tealium still maintains a proprietary profile store — but the CDW-exclusion concern that characterized prior evaluations is substantially mitigated.

Configuration Agent (MCP). An MCP-powered agent bridges strategy and execution: teams can configure Tealium directly from AI assistants (Claude, Gemini, OpenAI) via natural-language prompts. Human-in-the-loop approval gates are required for all final deployments.

AI Partner Ecosystem. Bi-directional Amazon Bedrock connectors, Pinecone vector retrieval, and LangChain agent orchestration. Enables Tealium to act as the real-time, consented data context layer for enterprise RAG pipelines and LLM agent workflows.

  • alternative-tovendor.oraclePeer enterprise packaged CDPs with proprietary profile stores. Oracle Unity's differentiator is Oracle ERP ecosystem coupling; Tealium's differentiator is server-side data collection and consent-first architecture. Both are evaluated in enterprise packaged-CDP selection contexts where AEP or a composable stack is not the preferred direction.
  • alternative-tovendor.twilio-segmentBoth packaged/semi-packaged CDPs with large integration ecosystems. Segment is engineering-led with developer-first SDK collection and 700+ connectors; Tealium is packaged with a proprietary profile store, marketer-accessible tag management, and 1,400+ integrations.
  • alternative-tovendor.mparticleBoth span tag management + CDP capabilities with strong server-side data governance. Tealium is enterprise/multi-brand with broader vertical reach; mParticle is mobile-first B2C with deeper SDK coverage for iOS/Android. Buyers selecting between a multi-vertical enterprise tag-mgmt+CDP and a mobile-first B2C CDP see these as direct alternatives.
  • prerequisite-oftech-dim.dev-team.frontend-tagsTC-139. Tealium iQ Tag Management is a client-side tag container — deploying and maintaining it requires a frontend-tags engineering team (JavaScript-capable, tag container governance, data layer ownership). Tealium AudienceStream (server-side CDI) requires the same team for the data layer instrumentation that feeds it. tech-dim.dev-team.frontend-tags was defined as the 'tag management and JavaScript team' discipline; Tealium is its primary vendor-side reference.
